Safeguarding
The Children Act (2015) specifies that Childcare Providers and their have a duty to safeguard children from harm and promote their well-being.
‘Working Together To Safeguard Children’ (2015) defines safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children as:
Injuries
It is essential that parents tell us on arrival at the setting of any existing injuries and how they occurred. We will record this information on our Existing Injury form and you will be required to sign the form to confirm the details. If we notice any injuries or marks that haven't been mentioned, we will ring for an explanation and the form should then be signed on collection.
We always document injuries that occur in the setting on our Accident/Incident form which should be signed on collection. If the injury is to the head, we will phone you and give you the details of how it happened. In most cases it won't be necessary for you to come and collect your child but you will be able to do so if you wish. We will text you about other injuries to remind you to sign the form on collection. If the accident is serious, we will phone for an ambulance or take your child to hospital and someone will inform you so you are able to meet us at A&E.
Visitors to the setting
Visitors to the setting are required to sign the Visitors Log and never have unsupervised access to the children.
DBS Checks
All staff are DBS'd before they start work at the setting. Apprentice practitioners are supervised until they qualify. Regular checks are carried out to ensure all staff remain suitable to work with children. Failure to pass checks will either require a wavier from Ofsted to continue working or they will be dismissed.
Personal Support of Children
Changing nappies or supporting children in the toilet is carried out in view of a second person.
Disclosures by Children
If a child discloses something that concerns us, we will either contact the parent for an explanation or if we think this may put the child at further risk we will take advise from out local Safeguarding Team.
Photography of Children
Because of today's technology of cameras on watches and phones, staff are not allow to access their phone whilst working with the children and are only allowed to wear watches without cameras.
Photographs are regularly taken of the children for observations and board displays. Once uploaded to Tapestry or printed for boards they are deleted from cameras and iPads.
We only use professional purchased photos on our website and only use photographs of children in the setting whose parents have give permission on our Facebook page. These photographs don't show the face of the children.
Unsafe Practices by Parents
If staff witness unsafe practices by parents, either whilst working or seeing children outside of work, they have a duty to report this to the local Safeguarding Team. This could be with or without our support. Other parents can either report incidents to us or contact the Safeguarding team directly.
This can cover what is seen or spoken about whilst babysitting, social events, ill fitting or inappropriate clothing and footwear, unhygienic practices, what is seen on arrival to or departure from the setting etc.
For example:
We are also required to give new parents a copy of the local authority's Safeguarding letter:
