Funding, Hours & Rates
Fizzy Fish have three settings, 2 in Hove (Nursery for the 0 to 3 year olds and Pre-School for the 3 & 4 year olds) and 1 in Portslade (Pre-school for the 2 to 4 year olds). The settings in Hove are open Monday to Friday 7:30am to 6pm each day, 51 weeks a year (we are closed for 5 working days from Christmas Day to New Years Eve). At our Portslade setting in Peter Gladwin School, we are open Term Time only - 38 weeks a year Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 3:30pm each day.
Fizzy Fish operate two different types of contract: All Year (51 weeks a year - closed for 5 working days from Christmas Day) or Term Time Only (38 weeks a year).
All funded hours are free of charge but flexible session times do incur additional costs.
If you wish to have standalone hours (completely free) only, this is offered as follows:
Hove Nursery and Pre-School - Afternoons on an All Year contract. If you are entitled to 30 hours, your session times will be Monday to Friday 13:30-17:54, 15 hours will be Monday and Friday plus 1 other day 13:30-17:06. All sessions are subject to availability. Tea will be provided.
Peter Gladwin Pre-School - on a Term Time only contract. If you are entitled to 30 hours, your session times will be Monday to Friday 9:30-15:30, 15 hours will be Monday to Friday 12:30-15:30. All sessions are subject to availability. A packed lunch must be provided. The lunch must be healthy and meet our healthy eating award restrictions. Details on request. Lunch box to contain a freezer pack as we don't have the facilities to refrigerate and we can't re-heat any items.
No additional sessions or hours are available.
Flexible funded sessions are subject to a Consumable charge. Additional payable sessions or hours are also available.
Both Contract types have a number of different sessions available each day:
Nursery and Pre-School
All Bank Holidays are payable if one of your contracted session falls on this day. We operate a Bank Holiday Swap scheme - this allows you to swap a Bank Holiday for another session of the same type within 28 days after the Bank Holiday. This is subject to a space being available for your child at the setting.
Most Bank Holidays do not fall within the Term Time Only dates but if (for instance early May Bank Holiday) they do fall within the Term Time period, they will be chargeable and available to swap for another day.
Normal contracted sessions are not swappable and sessions that aren't attended due to illness or family holidays/events are still payable.
Funding is available for children from the term after they reach the relevant age. For further clarity, please click on the links below for further information regarding your child's age band: 9 months, 2 year olds and 3 & 4 year olds. These pages also explain how to check whether you are eligible for funding.
Government funding is only paid for 38 weeks per year. The total funded hours can be spread across the full number of weeks we are open for those children attending a setting on an All Year Contract. If the funded hours are 'stretched', 15 hours equates to 11 per week and 30 hours to 22.
Serious consideration should be given when deciding on your Contract type. This is especially true if your child is receiving funded hours. You should decide on the Contract type at the start of receiving funding or the start of an academic year. If the Contract type is changed, funding may need to be taken back in some cases. Term Time Only contracts are applicable for a whole term, if you swap from an All Year Contract to a Term Time Only mid term, all the sessions for the term will be re-invoiced at the Term Time Only rate OR all contracted sessions under the All Year Contract will be invoiced up until the start of the next term.
Funding is offered in 5 hour blocks for the Hove settings and 3 hour blocks at Peter Gladwin. Any unused funded hours can be used for additional adhoc sessions during the academic term. For example, if you are entitled to 11 hours per week, you will only be able to use 10 funded hours per week. The addition hour can be banked and once you have 5 hours, an adhoc session can be booked.
Apart from the funded hours only sessions set out above, all other funded sessions have a Consumables charge - £8 per session for the Hove settings and £2.25 for Peter Gladwin.
Funding for working parents can be applied for via www.childcarechoices.gov.uk/how-apply-help-childcare-working-parents. You will be issued with an 11 digit code which must be supplied on your registration forms. This code will not change but does need to be re-validate every term. The Government funding is provided to the setting to educate the children, as with schools. There are certain elements of our sessions that are not covered by the funding because it is considered as non-educational.
Our Consumable Charge covers:
Example - A 3 year old who is attending the setting for 3 full days a week term time only would pay £79 per day. This would cost £237 per week with the total cost for the year being £9006. We currently receive £5893.80 for the same sessions if they are entitled to 30 funded hours. I hope from this example it helps you understand why settings are finding it difficult to balance their books without charging for extra services that the Government do not consider as educational.
Extra Sessions are charged at our normal All Year or Term Time Only rates and occasional extra hours added to a session are charged at £9.50 per hour for All Year contracts and £10 Term Time Only. Occasional extra hours are charged in 15 minutes blocks.
Late pick ups (after 6pm at the Hove settings and after 3:30pm at Peter Gladwin) and arranged early drop offs (before 7.30am at the Hove settings and before 8:30am at Peter Gladwin) are charged at £12.75 per half hour. These fees are charged because the hours are outside of the setting's normal hours and overtime for 2 members of staff have to be covered by this fee.
A registration fee of £50 is charged when a place is booked. This fee is non-returnable and a Fizzy Fish rucksack is issued once the child starts.
If two or more siblings are placed at the setting, we offer a 5% discount for the oldest sibling. This is applied from the younger sibling's first full month. One invoice is produced per family. Individual invoices are available upon request.
Payment is required in advance by the 5th of each month for all the contracted hours. Payment is still required even if the child is absent due to illness, family holiday/event, Bank Holidays or closures of settings beyond our control.
We operate a minimum of 2 sessions per week over 2 days policy, as some children find it difficult to settle when they only come into nursery one day a week. The two sessions allow us to build a strong and nurturing professional relationship with the children. Attendance is limited to 1 setting and children at Peter Gladwin cannot go to the other Pre-School during the holidays.
A 4 weeks+ notice period is required to end a contract or alter your sessions.
We work in full weeks and your contract will end on the Friday of the last week. ie If the notice period end on a Wednesday the contract will cease on the Friday afterwards.
This is in line with the local authority's funding policy. Such notice must not include a period where no fees are being paid (i.e. when the setting is closed or during school holidays if the contract is on a Term Time only basis). If you leave and are receiving funded hours and the new setting wants to claim the funding immediately, you will be responsible for payment of the full fees for 4 weeks+ notice period.
We will not accept any children who are attending other settings. We strongly believe that continuity of care is very important for children to feel settled and secure within a setting.
Because the Government funding is calculated in full weeks and the limitations of the Famly software, we work in full weeks, therefore the monthly invoice periods are as follows:
2025
January 6th to 31st
February 3rd to 28th
March 3rd March to 4th April (5 weeks)
April 7th April to 2nd May
May 5th to 30th
June 2nd June to 4th July (5 weeks)
July 7th July to 1st August
August 4th to 29th
September 1st September to 3rd October (5 weeks)
October 6th to 31st
November 3rd to 28th
December 1st December to 2nd Jan (5 weeks)
All invoices must be paid by the 5th of each month as payment is required in advance of the sessions.
You are not obliged to use all of your Free Entitlement (funded) hours and unused hours can be banked to use for adhoc sessions throughout the academic term.
Additional sessions/hours to your Contracted sessions may be booked if available (as long as you aren't just using your standalone hours) and they are charged at the rates below.
